JANEK MÄGGI: PEOPLE WILL FREEZE TO DEATH BEFORE THE GREEN POLICY GOALS ARE REALISED

Diseases kill fewer people than poverty.

You must prepare for peace during war, not open another front!

We know that Estonia is the sickest country in the world. This is no news. There is no cure, and politicians advise to choose who to treat and feel sorry for and who to ignore.

But diseases kill fewer people than poverty. We’re also trying hard to become the poorest country in the world – heating will soon be turned off in one apartment building after another, because people cannot afford to pay the bills anymore. Maybe they’ll buy the last loaf of bread and the last bottle of vodka that will offer some consolation in the worthless apartments of Kohtla-Järve before they freeze to death. Because the market value of the apartment is lower than the monthly heating and electricity bill.

It would be a good plan to start using wood-burning stoves for heating in all Soviet-era apartment buildings as a matter of urgency, but this would be contrary to international climate policy.

Support may be paid, but it’s no way out. Instead of crisis management, “the government is developing a universal price calculator, which helps every household to see (based on its income) how much support they can get, and then contact the local government,” said the news on ERR (02.11).

But there is no income. The places that used to hire unskilled workers – e.g. bars, canteens, restaurants, gyms – are already bankrupt or on the verge of bankruptcy. The fools who are afraid of vaccination have been fired. As the Internet has been turned off, there’s nowhere to play with this calculator. There’s no mental strength or health to contact anyone.

The systemic error, where all other infrastructures, and culture as well, fall apart, is so big that the plebs are preparing for a revolution – the scythes and pitchforks were already out, in Vabaduse väljak.
No one is trying to calm down the masses, but petrol is poured on the fire instead. Pull yourselves together! Be normal! Restaurateurs are 100% right – if there are restrictions on freedoms, they must be compensated for in money.

88 million euros sounds good. But will it reach everyone who really needs it?

You have to prepare for peace during war, not drive the entirety of society crazy – e.g. by fighting for the green policy whilst the people whose quality of life you’re allegedly trying to improve freeze to death before they even find out that someone is trying to do something for them, something they didn’t expect, ask for or need – to live, to survive.
