Janek Mäggi is the founder of Powerhouse, a public affairs agency that won Äripäev’s Communications Agency TOP ranking in 2021. He graduated from the Institute of Law of the University of Tartu in 1999 with a degree in law.
He worked at Äripäev from 1994 to 1997, served as Vice President of SEB Bank from 1997 to 2000, and in 2001–2002 was Head of the Eurovision 2002 Internet Gateway at Estonian Television (ETV). In the spring and autumn seasons of 2008, he hosted the economic programme “Miljon senti”.
Since 2005, Janek has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Tallinn Children’s Hospital Support Fund. On 5 February 2014, together with Hille and Toivo Tänavsuu, he founded the Hille Tänavsuu Cancer Treatment Foundation “Kingitud Elu” and serves as Chairman of its Supervisory Board. On 9 January 2018, together with Indrek Laul, Väino Kaldoja and Urmas Viilma, he founded the Church Fund (EELC Support Fund Foundation) and serves as its Executive Director.
From 1999 until January 2015, Janek was President of the Estonian Draughts Federation. From 2007 to 2017, he served as President of the European Draughts Confederation (EDC), and from 2017 to 2021 as President of the World Draughts Federation (FMJD). On 26 October 2025, he was re-elected President of FMJD, and on 28 February 2026 elected Vice President of the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA).
Janek remains an active draughts player. In 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, he won the silver medal in the Estonian 64-square draughts championship as a member of Team Remii. In 2024 and 2025, with the same team, he became Estonian champion in international draughts.
From September 2015 until the end of 2019, Janek served as Vice Chairman of the Curatorium of the Estonian Academy of Arts. From 2 May 2018 to 29 April 2019, he was a member of the Government of the Republic of Estonia and Minister of Public Administration. Since 19 October 2025, he has been a member of the Haapsalu City Council.
Janek is a member of Tallinn Cathedral Congregation. Since May 2021, he has been a member of its council and also serves on the congregation’s board. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Tallinn. Since September 2016, he has hosted the “Created Word Evenings” held at St. John’s Church in Tallinn.
He has published the poetry collections “Ood rõõmule” (2000) and “Hinge pealt ära” (2009), and is the author of the poems on the album “Eesti metsa lugu” (2011). Janek is the screenwriter of the documentary films “Viimsi saared” (2011) and “Viies võim” (2015), and co-screenwriter of “Helide maa” (2016) and “Helduse tund” (2018). In 2012, the joint book “Pind ja palk” by Janek and Jüri Arrak was published, and on 5 September 2023 his book “Diary 2005–2023. A Blast for Everyone, Equally!” was released.
He has published opinion articles in Eesti Kirik, Eesti Päevaleht, Delfi, Maaleht, the portal edasi.org, Postimees, Õhtuleht and Äripäev. In 2021, Janek was awarded the Order of Merit of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (III Class) and the Cross of Gratitude of the Tallinn St. John’s Congregation.
